One of the largest problems that seems to be riddling the future of America are the ones surrounding fossil fuels. Since fossil fuels are not a renewable resource, and as such, the United States is particularly interested in where and when this resource is consumed. Although the United States government, specifically the Department of Energy, is interested in fossil fuels; coal, oil, and natural gas. Oil is one of the most important energy sources in not only America, but also the world as a whole. Even though the fact that oil as a resource could run out the United states still consumes nearly 71% of all of the petroleum exports in the world. And although experts agree that there is plenty of gas for this generation, people are still worried about the fact that the energy will run out and what will they do then? The truth is that there are a number of different options that they can take. There are renewable energy sources all around us that have not been tapped on a large scale like solar, tidal, wind, and nuclear energy. All of these sources of energy have been all over the news in the last decade, and its about time you all knew more about it.
Solar energy or energy derived from the sun, is one of the most promising renewable energy sources to date, but there is one problem that still exists. How do we tap that energy? And fact is that there is, to date, no efficient way to gain energy through this process. Although many people have tried, through the use of solar farms, or even powering small complexes, businesses or even single homes with this power source.
Since solar energy is not a real viable energy source, at least on a larger scale, what other options are there? Tidal energy is another source of energy, the tides are controlled by the moon, and since the tides are constantly moving in and out, there is a source of energy at least twice a day. Tidal energy is gained through the force of the tides turning turbines and charging batteries through friction of the turning turbines. Then when the tide goes out the turbines turn the other way, and charge a different set of batteries. This process is much like the wind power.
Wind power is much like the process of tidal energy, except with wind energy instead of gaining power from the tides, wind energy gets its power from the force of the wind. Eastern University, a private college located in Wayne, PA, a suburb just outside of Philadelphia, gets most of its power from wind energy. However, like solar energy, it is not that efficient energy source because of the fact that they require turbines above the ground, and people don't want their horizon's impeded by wind power turbines.
The last form of energy I will review is nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is one of the most powerful energy sources accessible to America; however people won't allow it to happen. There are only a couple of nuclear power facilities around the United States, tow of which are in Pennsylvania. Peach Bottom and three Mile Island are of those facilities. The largest problem with this form of power is the paranoia that exists within American society. Since fear is the pace maker of the society, people are afraid of meltdowns and leakage, even though both are rare and can be safely contained, people are still afraid of what could happen, no matter how rare.
So far this post has been mostly facts, now here is my position. The fact is that there are still fossil fuels that can be accessed and that we should use these resources to the best of our ability. I also believe that we should research and do our best to progress with alternative energy sources. I also believe that nuclear energy is our best option, however nothing will happen until people put there fear aside and allow for the Department of energy to make reasonable steps in the right direction. All of the other sour cs of renew able energy are good, however I believe that project related to them should be lowered so that nuclear energy can be pursued with more focus. Why? Because all of the other sources of energy, where they are reliable, don't have enough output or are efficient enough to be put into work on a larger scale. This is my position of alternative energy.
Good stuff sir, I would say I agree with you
