My Position: Public War

Freedom of the press, one of this nations first 10 amendments to the American Bill of Rights. This spans all things, however there are times that some people believe that the media should indeed be censored or prohibited in some areas of life. One of the largest arguments for censorship is the brutality and reality of war. The military successfully censored the media out of wars before Vietnam. The United states military even created a department to film and take pictures that showed victories and, more importantly, no dead bodies, unless they were the enemies. The result were propaganda-esque, and the civilians that were far removed from the war had an over-whelming support for the war. World Wars 1 and 2, and the police action in Korea all saw this method of media censorship, and the result was improved morale at home, as well as on the fronts. Or at least that is the arguement. The opposing view point is that the media has always been involved and in cases where it wasn't the people of America deserve to know.
Here is my position. I think that in the case of the military that we really don't need to see our own boys getting shot at and dieing. That is how wars are lost, people at home losing faith in the soldiers and in turn the soldiers getting down on themselves. Although we are a society of fear, this is something that we simply don't need to see. Clips would be provided, and the stories would still be heard. The numbers won't be messed with so the truth is all there the difference is that we, as American citizens, won't see our friends and family dieing on screen; and what is the harm in that. This is My Position.
